CHOOSE THE RIGHT
CAREER!
1. Start With Yourself
The best place to start in choosing the right
career is within your self. Ask your self the question: What kind
of things do you like? Your interests are the key to your abilities
and your inclinations. Know exactly what your skills, achievements
and goals are along with your weaknesses. Does this four-step exercise
in helping you know exactly what you like:
A. Write down a list of things
you enjoy doing - Write down as many activities as you can think
of that you have been doing for a long time--go back through the
years, in fact. They don’t have a job-related; you can also
write down what you did during your school years. Write down as
many as possible, with a minimum of 10. Here’s an example
from one person:
- Sold homemade goodies during Christmas
- Actively volunteered during the annual college
intramurals
- Devised new database programs
- Enjoys meeting new people
- Surfs the internet daily
- Like going out with close friends
- Prepared the company’s team-building
activities
- Became a participant in a popular game show
- Loves outdoor photography
- Finds opportunities to travel
B. Rate each activity from
most-enjoyed to least-enjoyed - Go through your list thoroughly
and reorganize it into a list that starts with the activity you
enjoy the most to the activity you enjoy the new list. Here’s
hoe the person in our example rated his activities:
- Enjoys meeting new people
- Surfs the internet daily
- Finds the opportunity to travel
- Likes going out with close friends
- Became a participants in a popular game
show
- Loves outdoor photography
- Prepared the company’s team building
activities
- Actively volunteered during the annual college
intramurals
- Devised new database programs
- Sold home made goodies during the Christmas
C. Study the first three most-enjoyed
activities in your list- Naturally, this would be your first, second
and third listing. Ask yourself why you like doing these things;
try to see what’s similar among the three. Using the first
three items on the list, namely
- Enjoys meeting new people
- Surfs the Internet daily
- Finds opportunities to travel
We can see that the person in the example is
somebody who likes to discover and explore new things in life. He
or she is most likely a person who wants to experience something
different as often as possible.
D. Make general statements
of what you enjoy the most - Eureka! You’ve now discovered
what you really look for in life! The person in the example most
probably has this kind of general statements in mind: I am person
who wants to discover new things in life daily. Now, what are your
general statements?
